Bay Path College launches 'Kitchen Sink: A Women Writers' Workshop'Date: 7/7/2009 LONGMEADOW Nationally best-selling authors Luanne Rice and Elinor Lipman will be among the speakers and faculty featured at "Kitchen Sink: A Women Writers' Workshop" July 31 to Aug. 2 at Bay Path College.
Arranged by best-selling author and Bay Path's Writer-in-Residence, Suzanne Strempek Shea, the first ever Kitchen Sink weekend will allow women to study and build skills in one of five genres - children's, fiction, humor, memoir or screenwriting - and learn from highly successful authors in the fields. Participants in this all-female weekend will learn helpful tips from hooking the reader in just the first pages to getting their creative work published. The event will also comprise of writing sessions with renowned authors; a showing of the film "Then She Found Me," based on the novel by featured author Elinor Lipman; and readings by workshop authors and participants. All writing levels are invited to attend, and no previous writing experience is necessary.
"The weekend will provide literary education and interaction, as well as time to write and reflect in a retreat setting," Shea noted. "Bay Path is excited to launch this conference, which is one of the very few writing retreats in the country led by women for women - and including such stellar faculty."
Perennial New York Times best-selling author Luanne Rice will deliver the keynote address, "Finding Your Voice, Trusting Yourself: A Voice of One's Own." Rice's most recent works include "Last Kiss," "Light of the Moon," "What Matters Most," "The Edge of Winter," "Sandcastles" and "The Letters," a collaborative novel written with author Joseph Monninger. Rice lives in New York City and Old Lyme, Conn. Her latest novel, "The Geometry of Sisters," was published as a Bantam Hardcover in April.
"Women know the truth deep inside," said Rice. "It's so easy to doubt what we know, even what we feel - to give in to louder, stronger voices coming from other people, other places. Writing has been about learning to trust myself, allow myself to have a voice, believe that the story I have to tell is worthwhile."
Anyone may attend Rice's talk. Tickets are $10 for those not attending the conference. Registration is required and may be made by contacting Briana Sitler at 565-1066 or at bsitler@baypath.edu.
In addition to Rice, "Kitchen Sink" will feature the following workshops and writers:
Stories for Children and Young Adults with Lesl a Newman
Fiction with Elinor Lipman
Humor Writing with Sarah Walker
Personal Narrative in an Impersonal World - Memoir with Madeleine Blais
Screenwriting with Diane Lake.
Tuition and fees for "Kitchen Sink: A Women Writers' Workshop" is $1,000 per person, and includes the four writing workshops, lodging in air-conditioned dorms and all meals.
