Final Valley Voices StorySlam to take place at Hinge Feb. 13Date: 1/29/2015 NORTHAMPTON – The Valley Voices StorySlam collaboration between the Academy of Music Theatre and New England Public Radio (NEPR) continues its sell-out streak at UpBar at Hinge in downtown Northampton.
Following StorySlams in March, September, and November 2014, the final competition at Hinge will take place Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. The theme for first-person narratives is “Love Struck.”
A StorySlam is a competition based on the art of storytelling. It puts emphasis on content and performance, encouraging storytellers to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it. It is an exercise in crafting stories within a set time limit, and it's great entertainment.
The call for submissions runs through Jan. 23. Ten storytellers will be selected from the submissions to share their true story, based on their interpretation of the theme. They will tell their stories without notes and with a five-minute time limit. The stories will be recorded by NEPR, and the top three storytellers will be chosen by audience vote. The winners will have their stories featured on NEPR’s AudioFiles website and immediately qualify to compete in the Best of Valley Voices main stage performance at the Academy of Music Theatre on April 18.
Interested storytellers are asked to call NEPR’s designated phone line at 735-6688 to share the first sentence of their story and their contact information.
Phone lines will close at 5 p.m. on Jan. 23. Storytellers will be selected in late January based on the strength of their first line and adherence to the theme. Previous winners are ineligible to enter. You will be asked to leave your audition line, your name, phone number and email address.
Selected storytellers are invited to attend a free storytelling workshop on Feb. 7 led by Andrea Lovett, co-founder of the award-winning massmouth and representing L.A.N.E.S. (the League for the Advancement of New England Storytelling), which will help cultivate their personal stories into StorySlam-ready performances.
