Folk, blues artist returns to home for free concertDate: 5/3/2010 May 3, 2010
WILBRAHAM - On May 6, folk/blues artist Scott Perry, a 1982 graduate of Wilbraham & Monson Academy (WMA) who grew up in Wilbraham, will return to his hometown to perform a free concert in Alumni Memorial Chapel on the WMAcademy campus at 7 p.m. The concert, which is open to the public, will be followed by a reception at the academy's Athletic Center, and is sponsored by the academy's Francis Michael Casey Fund for the Fine and Performing Arts which annually brings performing and fine artists to the campus and community.
"I am thrilled to return to my roots and share my love for music with the community," said Perry. "Growing up in Wilbraham and attending the Academy set the stage for who I am today."
Perry, who has his own blues and roots music record label, Oh Papa!, will also be teaching workshops in songwriting and the blues to the academy's music students during his visit.
Perry spent much of his life traveling up and down the East Coast and into the Midwest learning and honing his craft.
He was first introduced to this music while in college by a Taj Mahal record, but soon was studying the records of Mississippi John Hurt, Robert Johnson and other country blues players from the 1920s and '30s.
Perry has also appeared at many of the nation's top clubs and festivals. These include the Chicago Blues Festival, the Charleston (S.C.) Blues Bash, the Taste of the Blue Ridge Blues and Jazz Festival, the Delaware Folk Festival, the Chateau Morrisette Our Dog Blues Festival, the Floyd World Music Festival and the Herndon Blues Festival.
