The Springfield Business Improvement District (BID) announces an eclectic mix of performers for the 2006 Stearns Square Free City Block Party Summer Concert Series. Concerts will begin on July 6 and run 10 Thursdays through September 7 at 7:30 p.m. in downtown Springfield's Stearns Square.
July 6Chris Duarte. This raw rockin' blues group will start the night playing really hard and by the end of the night they'll be playing twice as hard. This high energy band performs to move the audience as they intensely exhibit their own signature sound.
July 13Young Dubliners. This Irish-American quintet's highly accessible blend of Celtic rock sound is astounding. They continue to display their fiery and energetic spirit. These guys love to play together and do so all over the world and most importantly, they play extremely well.
July 20The Yardbirds. Rock's first super group and were one of the important bands in the 1960s London blues/pop/rock scene. They gained worldwide attention back then and are still doing so today. They are a one-of-a -kind band that mixes mature blues with heart, soul, and sensitivity.
July 27James Cotton. Blues legend, known as superharp, one of the blues world's greatest treasures and winner of a Handy Award for Best Traditional Album of the Year for his album 35th Anniversary Jam. Cotton and his harmonica are still blazing a trail through the musci world and his legacy continues to grow with each passing year.
Aug. 3Ten Years After. An original Woodstock performer. They have played in cities all over the U.S. to New Zealand, Singapore and Dubai. These legendary performers are still intense, distinct and as unique as ever.
Aug. 10Doug Stone. This Grammy nominated classic country balladeer will sing right to your heart. The sincere, moving love songs carry a uniquely powerful and arrow-direct emotional punch that showcases his own versatile style. Of Doug's first 15 singles, eight hit #1 and the other seven reach #5 or higher.
Aug. 17Big Brother & The Holding Company. Janis Joplin's original band. They are still enthralling audiences with their electric stage presence and San Francisco psychedelic style. They express their renewed sense of excitement as they still continue to play from the heart and soul and make a direct connection with the audience.
Aug. 24Steaks & Chops. Led by Jimmy Vivino (guitarist, arranger for Late Night with Conan O'Brien's house band, The Max Weinberg Seven). Watching this New York City's Super Power Trio, will clearly illustrate their popularity. The performance will be complete with extended solos, staple singers, type three-part harmonies and the energy and excitement of a James Brown meets Jimi Hendrix show.
Aug. 31Cherry Poppin' Daddies. They are the swing rock pioneers. Their 1997 release zoot suit riot, went double platinum and catapulted swing music back onto American popular radio. They bring the energy of the ultimate fun party band, and mix it up enough to delight audience members of all generations.
Sept. 7Roomful of Blues. Without a doubt, they are a Stearns Square favorite. The band's deeply rooted, horn-driven blend of music, rock 'n' roll, jump, blues, and soul has earned them five Grammy Award nominations and four W.C. Handy Blues Awards.
