NORTHAMPTON Linda Post, founding director of Paradise City, presents "Balancing Acts," opening Oct. 10, coinciding with the opening of the Paradise City Arts Festival, Oct. 11 through 13 in Northampton. "Balancing Acts" will be on display through Nov. 14 at R. Michelson Galleries in Northampton.
This is Post's first major exhibition of paintings, pastels and monotypes in nearly a decade.
Post had her first solo show in New York City in 1984. Since then, she has presented her work in more than a dozen solo shows nationwide. Her paintings reside in important corporate and private collections, both in the U.S. and abroad. Join us at the R. Michelson Galleries at at 132 Main St. for the opening of "Balancing Acts." Meet Post and enjoy the festivities at the Artist's Reception on Oct. 11 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Post's work has been exhibited at the Museum of the Rhode Island School of Design, the Rose Art Museum, the Newport Art Museum, the Springfield Art Museum and the Attleboro Art Museum. She has had solo shows at the Mary Ryan Gallery in New York City, the Wistariahurst Museum in Holyoke and Mary Washington College in Virginia. "Coming of Age," a nationally traveling portfolio of 30 monotypes curated by Joann Moser of the National Museum of American Art, includes her work.
Reviews and images of her paintings have appeared in the Boston Globe, the New York Times, American Artist and the Artful Mind. Post's dramatic painting "Solstice," on the cover of the Gettysburg Review, received the Ozzie Award for Design Excellence; the Review also selected Post's work for an eight-page color portfolio inside the same issue.
The artist writes: "My work is always figurative, with a distinct psychological edge. I am intrigued by the very tenuous balance of conscious and unconscious, the conjunction of dreaming and waking states. Many of my paintings take place at twilight or dawn the most ambiguous times of day, when even the sky is ambivalent about its intentions and impossible becomes possible. My most recent work, an exploration of the cusp of adolescence and the nature of personal relationships, is both more introspective and less overtly dreamlike than the imagery that has preoccupied me for the last 20 years.
"The psychological tension and the heightened emotional state of each work give them a distinctly prescient quality. My paintings are suggestive of images that we feel familiar with, images that are part of our collective unconscious. The underlying narratives describe our dreams and memories.
"I anchor my paintings in the places I know best," Post continued. "I grew up in New England near the ocean, and I have a special predilection for the clear light, sand dunes and salt marshes of islands and the seashore. Much of my adult life has been spent in Western Massachusetts, so my work also often includes the distinctive rolling hills and sinuous waterways of the Connecticut River Valley."
The Paradise City Arts Festival will feature fabulous food from area restaurants, live jazz performances and 275 juried artists from 30 states. The festival will be open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will be taking place at the Three County Fairgrounds.
