HCC Theater Department to stage one-act plays Date: 3/20/2015 HOLYOKE – The HCC Theater Department will present “An Evening of One-Acts,” a three-day festival of one-act plays April 2 to 4 at 7:30 p.m. in room 111 of the Fine & Performing Arts building.
Three one-act plays will be performed each night, guest directed by HCC alum Mike Pray, Class of 2008, of Chicopee, and produced by HCC students.
“Gravity,” by Bret Bucchi, tells the story of Jack and Sully as they struggle with their place in the world while searching for what they lack in each other.
“Small World,” by Tracy Scott Wilson, brings together three men and three women each on their own respective blind dates, striving for connection while dealing with their bizarre secrets.
“Captive Audience,” by David Ives, tells the story of Laura and Rob, a husband and wife whose marriage and lives are being invaded by the ever-alluring television, which threatens to cut the cord on their love.
“Though each one act is very unique, they all deal with a very real need for human connection,” says Pray, the recipient of this year's Lani Morrison McKenna Guest Artist Award, which is given each year to a guest artist at HCC in recognition of outstanding achievements in the arts. “Whether it's through the somewhat otherworldly lens of “Gravity,” the madcap energy of “Small World,” or the techno-magical of “Captive Audience,” there is a genuine realness and vulnerability in how vital connecting to another person is and just how difficult that can be in the face of standing, expectation, and technology.”
Pray is an actor, teacher, fight choreographer, and graduate of Holyoke Community College and Quinnipiac University's theater programs. He is a founding member of Real Live Theatre and Tieline Theater, where he acts as executive producer, as well as a teaching artist with Serious Play! Theatre Ensemble, where he teaches workshops in Suzuki, Anne Bogart's Viewpoints, and stage combat.
He has also taught at Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter School, Holyoke Community College, and in residence at various schools as well as the Connecticut-based Performing Arts programs and abroad in Nicaragua.
Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door.
