J-ART to stage 'Seussical'Date: 2/27/2015 SPRINGFIELD – This March, the JCC Actors Repertory Theater (J-ART) will be staging “Seussical: The Musical” at the Springfield Jewish Community Center as a part of the celebration of the 111th birthday of Dr. Seuss.
Based on the incredible work of Dr. Seuss, “Seussical: The Musical” tells the story of Horton the Elephant as he tries to protect the tiny world of Who and prove to the world “a person’s a person no matter how small.”
“It's about being kind and respectful to others,” cast member Lisa Rizzo, 24, of West Springfield, said. “What’s great about Dr. Seuss is that it doesn’t matter how old you are. You still relate and connect to the characters and story.”
J-ART will bring the show into the community before it opens in March. To celebrate the 111th birthday of Dr. Seuss on March 3, J-ART will make character appearances at local schools and libraries as well as Barnes & Noble (Feb. 22, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) to promote literacy and the arts.
“I’m most excited about doing the literacy events,” says Rizzo. “I can’t wait to bring Dr. Seuss to life and interact with children and families.” The cast will perform songs, tell stories and lead craft projects. The community events are free and open to the public.
The Barnes & Noble event on Feb. 22 is also a book fair/fundraiser for performing arts. Patrons who purchase items Feb. 19 to 26 at Barnes & Noble using the code 11557360 will help the performing arts program at the Springfield JCC receive a percentage of proceeds.
“Seussical the Musical” is directed by J-ART member Eric Frary, 23, of Holyoke. Performances will be March 5 to 15. For showtimes, visit www.SpringfieldJCC.org. Purchase tickets by calling the Springfield JCC, 739-4715. Tickets are $10 children under 12, $15 adults, and $20 patron reserved seating.
