Magic comes to BingDate: 1/23/2017 SPRINGFIELD – Three area magicians are teaming up for what is being described by Brian Hale, executive director of the Bing Arts Center as “a fast-paced, provocative, Dadaesque combination of wizardry, mentalism, and off-beat humor.”
Calling themselves the “Punks of Prestidigitation,” the trio of PJ Pinsonnault, Jonas Cain, and Scotty Swan will be appearing Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. at the Bing at 716 Sumner Ave. Admission is $10, for adults and $5 for students.
Swan, a resident of Northampton, said it will be the first time for the three performers to appear together, something they have planned to do for a long time, he told Reminder Publications.
A puppeteer as well as a magician, Swan described what he does as a “street performance transferred to a stage.” His work includes “a lot of pop culture references,” he added.
He described it as “geek magic.”
Pinsonnault, a Springfield resident has examples of his magic at his Facebook page (www.facebook.com/TheMagicOfPjPinsonnault/) including an impressive card trick.
Cain, from Shelburne is an inspirational speaker and author as well as a magician.
Swan said each of the performers will have their time and perhaps will interact on the finale of the show. He added that Cain is a mentalist who will amaze people with what he can tell about themselves, while Pinsonnault might do some amazing illusions with a Rubik’s Cube.
Swan said, “It will be quirky stuff you don’t see any other place.”
He added the performance is not intended to be a performance for children. “I won’t say ‘sophisticated’ because we’re not but it’s not birthday material.”
Swan started his life as a performer in 1997 as a puppeteer and then a magician for children. “Then it took a dark turn,” he said with a laugh and began to do street magic as will as appear in cabaret shows.
He said he put more of his own personality into the act.
He said his approach to magic is “to learn something and then deconstruct it to fit my personality.”
Ideally the three performers would like to take their show on the road, Swan said.
