Museums announce March lecturesDate: 2/26/2016 SPRINGFIELD – The Springfield Museums’ monthly tour and lecture schedule continues in March with the popular Museums à la Carte lectures, which take place each Thursday at 12:15 p.m. in the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts.
A highlight of this month’s offerings will be the March 31 talk about Vincent van Gogh by Charles Hayward, longtime Museum lecturer and educator. Admission is $4 ($2 for members of the Springfield Museums); visitors are invited to bring a bag lunch (cookies and coffee are provided). March lectures are as follows:
March 3 – Commissioning a Classical Work in the 21st Century: Bringing Kenneth Fuchs’ “The Spiritualist,” To Life. Kevin Rhodes, music director, Springfield Symphony Orchestra, and Kenneth Fuchs, UCONN Professor of Music Composition, provide a behind-the-scenes look at their collaboration on a new piano concerto.
March 10 – Irish Fiddle. Eileen Markland, violinist, violist, fiddler, presents a fun hour of interactive Celtic-flavored dialogue and music.
March 17 – Trust the Dog – Partners in Exceptional. Eliot D. Rusman, President and CEO of the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, offers an look into the life-changing and life-saving partnerships between Fidelco German Shepherd Guide Dogs and their blind partners.
March 24 – Vincent: A Portrait by the Postman Roulin. A passionate portrait of the artist Vincent van Gogh delivered by his loyal friend, the Postman Joseph Roulin, portrayed by author and actor Ted Zalewski.
March 31 – Vincent van Gogh: The Last Chapter. How Genius Challenged Tradition and Then Transformed It. An exploration of the artist’s later life through his work and writings by Charles B. Hayward, MFA, artist, art educator, global trekker, international great-grandfather.
As part of the Museums’ members-only “Continuing Conversations” series, museum docent Pat Storey will lead a guided gallery discussion at the Wood Museum of Springfield History immediately following the March 10 talk, and docent Robin Stolk will lead a post-lecture gallery discussion at the D’Amour Museum of Fine Art after the March 24 lecture.
On March 4, the Springfield Science Museum’s large rooftop telescope will be open for public sky gazing at 7:30 p.m. as part of the “Stars Over Springfield” observatory series. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children 17 and under. These programs are held rain or shine.
