Onyx Fusion attracts crowds

SPRINGFIELD The parking lot was full, the bar was crowded and most of the tables were occupied with diners. Dr. Michael Spagnoli, co-owner of Onyx Fusion bar and restaurant, said he was "thrilled, more than happy" on the first official day open for the new attraction.
Part of a multi-million dollar renovation of the former Basketball Hall of Fame, the new L.A. Fitness location will open next door to Onyx in three to four week, Spagnoli said. He said the fitness club has received a great response from the public, thanks in part to a low monthly membership rate.
Onyx takes its name from the semi-precious stone that makes up the restaurant's bar. Above the bar, a bank of 18 television sets was showing an aerial tour of the Grand Canyon.
The three-level restaurant has the bar area on the first floor with a large sushi bar and a quiet dining area. More dining is on the second floor where live musicians play. On the third floor is an area for over-flow dining or private parties.
And while the d cor is opulent, the restaurant is "green," with many energy saving features and use of recycled and renewable materials in its construction.
The menu, created by Chef Isaac Bancaco features variety of sushi, appetizers, salads and entr es that combine flavors from both the East and West.
Spagnoli and his partner Peter Pappas started the project three years ago and Spagnoli said that Onyx has created over 100 jobs and that L.A. Fitness will create another 100.
Musician Eric Bascom and his jazz group will be playing at the restaurant on Tuesdays from 6 to 10 p.m. through April 29.
Although both men have gone into different businesses Spagnoli is a successful chiropractor and speaker on health issues and Pappas is a machinery importer and exporter the lifelong friends have family roots in the hospitality industry. Spagnoli's family had a tavern in Springfield, while Pappas' family had a restaurant in Chicopee.
It's little wonder that looking around the bustling action of his official opening night, Spagnoli said, "It's not work for me. It's fun. I'm in my element. I love it."
