South Congregational Church announces Jazz SundayDate: 2/16/2009 SPRINGFIELD -- South Congregational Church of Springfield will host Jazz Sunday on Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. The Hot Cat Jazz Band will perform a rendition of Paul Halley's Freedom Trilogy during the service. The band will also play New Orleans-style jazz at the fellowship hour after worship. Traditional beignets and cafe au lait will also be available at the fellowship hour. The church is located at 45 Maple St. on the corner of Maple and High streets.
"We bring Jazz Sunday along each year just before the season of Lent begins," said Rev. Peter Heinrichs. "It's a way of praising God in a different mood before Lent takes us inside and solemn!"
Paul Halley's Freedom Trilogy is a composition that mixes two African songs with Gregorian chant and the hymn "Amazing Grace." Halley, a composer, arranger, pianist and organist, served as the organist and choirmaster at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City from 1977 to 1989. He introduced a combination of classical and contemporary music into the cathedral's music program. During his tenure at the cathedral, Halley was also a member of the Paul Winter Consort, and earned four Grammy Awards for his contributions as featured writer and performer on many Consort recordings.
The Hot Cat Jazz Band (www.hotcatjazz.com) specializes in swing, big band jazz and classic rock dance music. Their repertoire includes swing standards of George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Duke Ellington; big band hits of Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey and New Orleans and Dixieland favorites.
