Spice up your lunchtime with live music at Symphony Hall
SPRINGFIELD - The uplifting sound of the trumpet will put some spice into the Springfield Symphony Orchestra's lunchtime concert, Feb. 9 at 12:30 p.m. in Symphony Hall.
The orchestra, conducted by Maestro Kevin Rhodes will present excerpts of the music of Ravel, Hummel, Haydn and Mozart all in a relaxing, informal atmosphere.
"They are some of the classical era's best-known composers. There is also a passing on of a tradition, as Mozart was influenced by, and studied the works of Haydn; and Hummel studied with Mozart," commented Rhodes.
International trumpeter Ryan Anthony will solo in excerpts of the classical composer Johann Hummel's "Concerto for Trumpet in E Major." "Rarely do you get to hear the trumpet as a soloist," said Rhodes.
Ryan Anthony is a former member of the renowned Canadian Brass. He is currently serving the Dallas Symphony Orchestra as interim "principal trumpet."
Only 16 years old when he won the Seventeen Magazine/General Motors Concerto Competition, Anthony continues to win over audiences and critics alike with his charismatic performances.
The fiery French composer Maurice Ravel will be represented by "Le Tombeau de Couperin," a baroque piece that bubbles over with excitement said Rhodes. Based on dances, the music is a celebration of all that was great in French culture.
Mozart's "Symphony No. 38, K 504 In D Major" got its inspiration from Prague. It has a slow, dramatic introduction and then becomes more complex with six different themes.
The orchestra will play parts of "Symphony No. 94, in G Major, Surprise," said Rhodes. Franz Joseph Haydn premiered "Symphony No. 94" in London in March of 1792. Audiences can order a box lunch to enjoy during the concert or bring their own lunch to enjoy in the Mahogany Room before the performance.
Rhodes will discuss the musical selections with the audience during the concert.
