Springfield pop-up beer gardens celebrated by Wine & FoodDate: 8/5/2016 SPRINGFIELD – The national foodie magazine and website Food & Wine featured Springfield’s “pop up beer gardens, in a rotating set of downtown locations,” as one of this summer’s best, among others in San Francisco and Brooklyn. White Lion Wednesdays, organized by the Business Improvement District, are new in Springfield for 2017, but have already found their place in the Downtown lineup.
White Lion Wednesday was an idea that sprung from the popularity of al fresco dining regionally, as well as a desire from the Downtown workforce for after-work events. White Lion, Springfield’s first brewery, was a natural fit for this event, said Executive Director of the BID, Chris Russell. He continued “The simplicity of this event is what people love the most. We provide a welcoming space with White Lion, and we’ve amassed quite a following. Wednesdays Downtown are now a time to relax and connect with friends or coworkers in our beautiful outdoor spaces.”
Each event takes place at Tower Square Park, the Shops at Marketplace, or the MassLive Building. This rotating schedule was intentionally set by Russell, to encourage walking throughout the Downtown rather than one location. Local musicians and a roaming magician perform every Wednesday night, and attendees are encouraged to play giant jenga or cornhole, both set out amongst picnic tables and chairs.
All four current White Lion offerings are available at each event, as well as wine and other beverages for the beer-averse. The next Wednesday, August 3, will take place in Tower Square Park directly across from 1500 Main.
This weekly event will continue through Aug. 17, with the potential to expand into early autumn. More details on White Lion Wednesdays including locations and dates can be found at SpringfieldDowntown.Com/White-Lion-Wednesdays.
