The Best Damn Sandwich: Frigo’s FoodsDate: 10/24/2018 EAST LONGMEADOW – As The Reminder’s quest for the best damn sandwich continues, this week the column brings us to Frigo’s Foods in East Longmeadow.
In a rush out of my house on Monday morning I managed to forget my lunch in the fridge. Wracking my brain to decide where I could grab a quick bite in close proximity to the office, I decided that I should peruse the list of sandwiches that our loyal readers suggested we test out. Reader Ellen Moorehouse recommended putting Frigo’s turkey sandwich with Havarti cheese to the test.
Prior to my sandwich purchase, I was chatting with my coworker Debbie Garner, expressing how Frigo’s is always extremely busy with local workers at lunch hour. She suggested I look at their menu online and call to place my order.
Immediately I logged on to frigofoods.com, and found that they have an online order system through “ChowNow.” Customers can place an online order for pick up at both the East Longmeadow or Springfield location, and the order can be picked up within 15 minutes or scheduled for later times, even days in advance.
I found this to be a quick and convenient way to order my sandwich. When I arrived at Frigo’s the sandwich was waiting for me in a brown paper bag on a shelf, and I happily brought it back to the office.
The first thing I noticed about the sandwich actually wasn’t about the sandwich at all. The quality of paper the sandwich was wrapped in was thick, white paper with Frigo’s logo inscribed on it in green. I thought this was a nice, thoughtful touch.
The turkey sandwich was served on a water roll, but could also be served on a 10–inch grinder or a ½ Vienna. I purchased mine as suggested: a turkey sandwich with dill Havarti, shredded iceberg lettuce and tomato.
The sandwich ran me $6.42, and it was well worth it. It was a large sandwich with generous slices of turkey. The only downside: there wasn’t any mayonnaise. When I placed my order there was an option to remove mayonnaise, which I did not select, so I assumed it automatically came with the mayonnaise on it. This is something that probably wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t made an attempt to avoid a long line and simply ordered in person.
All in all, Frigo’s turkey sandwich with Havarti cheese was delicious, and one I would purchase again. Next time though, I’ll be sure to add the mayo! What local sandwich shop sells the best damn sandwich in your opinion? Send news@thereminder.com your recommendation.
