The Best Damn Sandwich: Milano’s Importing week twoDate: 11/7/2018 SPRINGFIELD – In case you missed Reminder Assistant Editor Jordan Houston’s Best Damn Sandwich review from last week, allow me to explain. This week marks week two of a four–week feature of Milano Importing’s sandwiches in our column.
When it comes to sandwiches, I have to admit, I’m fairly “plain Jane.” I love Turkey, I’m not a fan of ham, and I don’t often venture out of my comfort zone. Forgive me; I just know what I like! For whatever reason, I decided I wanted to spice up my life when the reporting staff took our trip to Milano’s Importing at 988 Main St. in downtown Springfield. We all agreed that we would be testing out a different sandwich, so I decided to take a risk and try “Nick’s Pick.”
Milano’s “Nick’s Pick” is a prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, lettuce and tomato sandwich which I had served on a bulkie roll. While I do enjoy prosciutto, I hadn’t experienced a prosciutto sandwich before.
We ordered our sandwiches and took them to–go back to the office. One by one we each opened our sandwiches, and by the time of consumption, a spot of the balsamic vinegar had seeped through my sandwich on the top of the roll. This probably wouldn’t have happened if I had eaten the sandwich on the spot, and of course it’s not a big deal, but looks–wise, the sandwich simply doesn’t look as “pretty” as the others in photos.
While I will note I wasn’t necessarily impressed by the appearance of the sandwich on the outside, I will say, the inside more than made up for it.
Milano’s had placed a generous amount of prosciutto on the sandwich, which paired deliciously with the fresh mozzarella. Despite seeping through the top of the roll, the balsamic vinegar and oil complimented the flavors of the meat and cheese well. I felt as though I was eating a similar sandwich to a caprese (one of my favorites), only with the added meat.
I look forward to going back to Milano’s in the future, and I’m glad I stepped outside of my comfort zone and tested out the “Nick’s Pick.” If you’re a fan of fresh ingredients and a welcoming atmosphere, you’ll feel right at home at Milano’s.
