Off the Cruise Early, but Late Night Flight

In this era of bankrupt airlines, reduced number of flights, crowded planes, cancelled and delayed flights, being able to squeeze a little extra vacation is, as the commercial says, "Priceless".

Sometimes we have to make the tough choice of taking the best type of flight rather than the best time. For instance, choosing to take a late non-stop versus an earlier flight time. While it may get us home sooner, it has a long layover or connects through a cold weather city (where we could get stuck if there is a snowstorm). As much as we like traveling, hanging out in airports is no fun, in our book.

For an upcoming cruise, we face this very situation. We can be off the ship by 9:00 a.m., but the non-stop flight to Hartford does not leave until late at night. What to do? What about the luggage? We decided to make our vacation last a little longer by booking a hotel room for the day. We and another couple are splitting the cost of a quadruple size room in Miami, and enjoying the use of the facilities. This gives us the opportunity to hang out by the pool, store our luggage, and have a base of operation to check out local sites. In the evening, we'll take a taxi or shuttle to the airport for our flight. You notice we did not say "check out" of the hotel. That will be done over the phone (provided that is allowed by the hotel) when we are at the baggage claim area at Bradley International. The reason for that is, should our flight from Miami be cancelled due to any number of reasons (especially weather related), we will not be one of the hundreds or thousands scram-bling to secure a hotel for the night. It may be tight sharing a hotel with 4 adults, but at about $30 per person, it sure beats sleeping in an airport.
