Northern Conn. Vegetarian Society invites public to monthly potluck

GREATER SPRINGFIELD -- The Northern Connecticut Vegetarian Society is a non-profit organization which advocates a compassionate and healthy vegetarian diet. We have monthly potlucks with a featured speaker. Anyone interested in improving his or her health and the health of the world is invited to the monthly potluck.

On Feb. 28 at 5 p.m., Dr. Kathy Dennis-Yawingu, MD, FACR, will be the featured speaker at Northern Connecticut Vegetarians Potluck. Anyone interested in improving his or her health and the health of the world is invited.

Dennis-Yawingu attended Syracuse Medical School and did an Internal Medicine Residency at Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, Long Island, New York. She next completed a fellowship in Rheumatology at the University of Pennsylvania in 2005. She joined the St. Francis Rheumatology Division in 2005 and has a practice focused on rheumatic diseases. She has a keen interest in lifestyle medicine and firmly believes that most diseases stem from lifestyle habits. She advocates veganism to her patients as well as other healthy lifestyle changes like getting adequate rest, water and exercise. She will enlighten attendees on her lifestyle as a vegan and how it relates to her profession.

For the potluck, attendees should bring a Healthy Vegan Dish to share along with its recipe and your name. Vegan means zero honey, fish, dairy, poultry and other animal products. Also, attendees should bring their place setting (dish, cup and utensils). A donation of $7 for adults is requested. Children are free. The dinner will take place at Carniglia Senior Center, 41 Oak St., Windsor Locks, Conn.
