Ice Cream pioneer Steve Herrell releases new bookDate: 12/27/2021 NORTHAMPTON – Steve Herrell, the legendary entrepreneur who founded Herrell’s Ice Cream in Northampton and Steve’s Ice Cream in Somerville, recently released his new book titled “Ice Cream & Me.”
Herrell, who is well-known for originating the concept of ice cream mix-ins, told Reminder Publishing that he would take notes all throughout his career of important stories or events he experienced, as well as other nuances that came with the ice cream business. As a former high school English teacher, Herrell said many people commended him for his writing talents, so he wanted to use that attribute to write about his lived-in experiences.
“[The book] is more of a memoir and biography with lots of discussion about ice cream itself,” said Herrell, when describing the concept of the book. Herrell started Steve’s Ice Cream in 1973, offering a creamy and dense style of ice cream. He is known for making flavors like Cookie’s ‘n’ Cream and Heath Bar Crunch more widely available and adding more ingredients to his ice cream to intensify the flavors.
“Ice Cream & Me” follows the last 41 years of Herrell’s innovative ice cream businesses, including personal anecdotes, the ups-and-downs of the business, and the scientific idiosyncrasies behind the production of his ice cream, including information on his famous ice-and-salt method. Herrell wrote the book after he retired in 2014.
“I wrote the book the way I wanted to write it out,” said Herrell. “Customers have asked me a lot of questions all throughout the years, and this is the answer to all of their questions.”
Herrell added that he believes customers will thoroughly enjoy the book because it encapsulates many different emotions and moments throughout his career. There are funny stories, sad anecdotes, science, human warmth, and humor sprinkled all throughout the pages.
“There’s a technical aspect to it too, as well as historical,” said Herrell.
Jerry Greenfield, the co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s, spoke highly of Herrell and his book: “Steve Herrell is an icon and literal giant in American ice cream. Ben and I were thrilled to meet Steve in his original store near Boston in the early 70s,” said Greenfield. “It was there that he introduced the ice cream mixing to the world, and mechanically altered a freezer to bring back a rich, creamy ice cream. His book is full of fantastic stories, good humor, the challenges and rewards of an entrepreneur, and surprising tales that will delight you and leave you feeling hungry for a sundae.”
“Ice Cream & Me” is available at Broadside Books, A2Z Science and Nature, and Booklink Booksellers – all places in Northampton. The book is also available at Amherst Books in Amherst, Odyssey Bookstore in South Hadley, and on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Ice-Cream-Me-Steve.../dp/0578965089/.
The book is self-published.
