Agawam, West Springfield competing to donate textiles for prize

Date: 10/12/2022

WESTERN MASS. – The friendly rivalry between Agawam and West Springfield has turned into a friendly contest that will help people clean out their closets and make a real difference for the environment, as well as children in need.

Both communities are participating in the Community Textile Challenge all through the month of October. Hartspring Foundation is looking to collect unwanted clothing, shoes, linen and textiles to be recycled and kept out of landfills.

The community that donates the most will receive a $500 prize for either the Agawam Municipal Scholarship Fund or the West Springfield High School’s Terrier Closet Program.

In West Springfield there will be residential pickups on Oct. 13 and 27. In Agawam there will be a fill-the-truck event on Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Department of Public Works, 1000 Suffield St., and residential pickups on Oct. 25. To schedule a residential pickup, go to www.donatehartsprings.org.

Headquartered in West Springfield, the organization describes its mission as “dedicated to supporting and raising funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies in Western and Central Massachusetts, as well as Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Connecticut. For over a century, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been a leader in providing hope to children facing adversity hope through the power of one-to-one relationships. Hartsprings Foundation’s goal is to support this mission via the collection and sale of used clothing and other items, providing all proceeds to Big Brothers Big Sisters."
