Annual Davide Nascimento soccer tourney slated for Aug. 19

Date: 8/16/2023

LUDLOW — The eighth annual Davide Nascimento 7 vs. 7 coed soccer tournament will be hosted on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Gremio-Lusitano Club, 358 Windsor St.

The pavilion bar will be open for drinks, but food will not be available.

There will be pizza delivered for everyone following the final match, which should wrap up around 12:30 p.m., according to Mario Nascimento.

The tournament is in memory of Davide Nascimento who was a construction worker that was killed at 28 years old in an accident at a Longmeadow job site in 2015.

Widow Stephanie Nascimento, brother Mario Nascimento and family friend Kelly Kapinos put together this event to remember Davide Nascimento.

“We wanted a way to grieve and also keep his memory alive. It really was the perfect way to do it,”Stephanie Nascimento said.

Stephanie Nascimento said Davide was a huge fan of soccer including a playing career at Ludlow High School where he won the state championship in 2003 and coached.

“We though what better way to honor him and also be able to do something in his name and in his memory,” said Stephanie Nascimento.

The fee per each team is $100 and each year this event has raised anywhere from $500 to $1,000.

“Every year the funds from the event are donated to benefit something “near and dear to us” Stephanie Nascimento said.

She added, “Usually it’s right in our community. Every year we try to pick something that is happening right now and who could use some support.”

In the past, they have donated to the Ludlow Boys and Girls Club, the Ludlow Youth Soccer Association and other community driven fundraisers.

This year all proceeds will be donated to Brianna Allen, a student at Harris Brook Elementary School who’s been diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment.

Stephanie Nascimento added, “There is really nothing better than being able to give back to the community. To continue his legacy and be able to give in his memory. I think it is something beautiful that I can do for my kids to host an event they look forward to every year and celebrating their dad’s life and also teach them what it means to give back and help others.”

Savanna and Cristiano were 1 and 5 years old, respectively, when their father died.

This is the first year that Cristiano will have a team in the tournament.

Stephanie Nascimento added, “We are really looking forward to this year and the thought is as he gets older, he will run with his and make it and grow it even more.”
