Ludlow looking for input from residents for two separate surveys

Date: 8/9/2023

LUDLOW — Town Administrator Marc Strange, Town Planner Doug Stefancik and the town are looking for residents to take part in a survey for business and property owners along the East Street Revitalization Zone and Open Space and Recreation Plan.

Ludlow was awarded a $75,000 Community Planning grant by the State Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities to update the East Street Revitalization District Zoning Bylaw, which aims to create a more welcoming environment to attract visitors and potential patrons to the area.

The district is defined as East Street between King and Stevens streets, and all non-industrial parcels within 200 feet of East Street.

The survey should take about five minutes to complete, according to Strange.

It seeks the public’s opinion on a number of topics including availability of parking, potential changes to parking restrictions and duration, ways to improve pedestrian safety including speed bumps and rapid flashing beacons at crosswalks, addition/improvement of green spaces, upgrades including trash cans, benches, bike racks, banners, flags, seasonal decorations and consistent signage, economic opportunities including temporary outdoor dining spaces, pop-up shops, mural or art installations and mini-pocket parks.

Survey results will inform the town and its project team at Weston and Sampson as they consider the future possibilities for the district.

Residents may take the survey online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/EastStreetRevitalization.

Paper surveys are also available at Ludlow Town Hall, 488 Chapin St., and Hubbard Memorial Library, 24 Center St.

Surveys must be completed or returned by Friday, Aug. 18.

The town is also looking for input on another survey to update its Open Space and Recreation Plan.
Town Planner Doug Stefancik is the project manager.

He said the survey is to learn about the residents’ use of recreational and open space facilities and programs in Ludlow along with what improvements they would like to see.

Stefancik added, “We would like to know what the residents in Ludlow do recreationally, and where they partake in recreational activities. We also want to know what they think should be the open space and recreation priorities for the town.”

Every five years, the town is required to update its Open Space and Recreation Plan, which requires a committee.

Since it’s time for an update, the Board of Selectmen appointed a committee in May.

The survey can be found at www.surveymonkey.com/r/_Ludlow_OSRP.

All surveys are due by Sept. 15 and Stefancik added that by December, the intention would be to have the new Open Space and Recreation Plan in place.
