LUDLOW – There is an upcoming electronics recycling event at the First Church in Ludlow on Aug. 13 from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. at 859 Center St. All towns are welcome to participate in this event. The church is accepting all electronics, bikes and appliances. With the fees listed below, items will be re-purposed or recycled properly.
Karen Robison, head of the social action and fundraising committee at the church said, “We try to get out into the communities and find out what the needs are of our community. That’s part of the reason we’re doing this electronics recycling event.”
The First Church in Ludlow, UCC (United Church of Christ) has been in town since 1774, serving the area as a community of faith through caring, sharing and giving; working with people experiencing homelessness and supporting the Community Survival Center in Indian Orchard.
“This is the first one we’ve done for electronics. We wanted to try and help the community get rid of items that they don’t know how to get rid of anymore, as well as helping the environment,” Robison replied. “We are working with the company Green Day Recycling. They will take items brought to us and have them properly recycled.”
The members of First Church had been coming up with ideas on what they could do to help the community, and a member saw one of these events take place at a church in Monson. Robison said this event is so important because of the environmental impact and the improper disposal of so many of these items.
The church will be running a bake sale and their Hummingbird Yarn & Fabric Store and Bookstore will be open during the event. People can also bring reusable clothing in bags and put it in the church’s shed in the back of their parking lot for clothing only.
Some of the proceeds will go to support their church missions, but right now the church does not have a specific project in mind. She explained they are trying to reach out to the community to find out what needs there are.
“This event is to help our environment and help our community to hopefully lessen the carbon footprint of all of us,” Robison added. “We’re hopeful that this is going to be a big success and an annual event.”
