MassDOT to host public hearing for Broad Brook bridge replacement in Ludlow

Date: 12/6/2022

LUDLOW – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will be hosting a public hearing on Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. to discuss a bridge replacement project on Piney Lane that goes over Broad Brook.

The hearing will be a pre-recorded virtual public hearing hosted on the MassDOT website to present the design for the proposed project.

All public comments should be submitted within 10 business days after the conclusion of the hearing and MassDOT said all comments will be reviewed and considered.

The purpose of this meeting is to provide the public an opportunity to become aware of the proposed bridge replacement project.

Piney Lane currently crosses Broad Brook over a series of three pipe culverts and has been rated in critical condition according to the last inspection report from MassDOT.

Based on the past inspection, a new and permanent bridge is required to ensure the safe movement of traffic.

MassDOT proposes to remove the culverts and replace them with precast concrete adjacent deck beams. The proposed roadway will match the existing cross section and will include 11-foot travel lanes and 3.5-foot shoulders for a total curb to curb width of 29 feet.

For those wondering how this affects the community, this bridge is the only access to a dead end residential road.

MassDOT proposes to provide an adjacent temporary bridge during construction to maintain access.
This pre-recorded virtual design public hearing or a cancellation announcement will be published at www.mass.gov/massdot-highway-design-public-hearings.
