LUDLOW — Town Administrator Marc Strange has been appointed to the Massachusetts Municipal Association’s designee to the Attorney General’s Open Meeting Law Advisory Commission. He received a call from MMA’s legislative director David Kaufman and his appointment officially began on Nov. 1.
“It feels great,” Strange said. “I really love the work that I do as a municipal professional and administrator. This gives me a chance to expand that reach through a state level commission.”
The Open Meeting Law outlines rules and regulations for public bodies, including posting of meeting notices, keeping and handling of meeting minutes, investigations, and resolutions of complaints, and remote participation. The Open Meeting Law Advisory Commission reviews issues related to the Open Meeting Law and advises the Attorney General’s Office on regulations, training, and educational initiatives. It’s a five-member commission with one town administrator or town manager. The current town administrator is retiring, so the MMA’s legislative team reached out to Strange to offer him the role and he happily accepted.
Strange has been in municipal government for more than eight years and is always looking for ways to serve and help people. He went to law school at Western New England University and during law school he was the law clerk for the town of Agawam. It was during that experience Strange said that he fell in love with municipal work.
“It was so authentic and close to the ground.” he added. “At that point, I decided that I wanted to become a lawyer for a town.”
In 2014, Strange was the director of planning in the town of Agawam. He was elected to the Longmeadow Select Board for three years before becoming the town administrator for Ludlow. He’s also on the MMA Policy Committee for Regional and Municipal Administration. Strange believes his experience every day in the trenches working for the municipality will be very valuable for the Commission. He can provide information as to how some of these rules and regulations are put into practice.
“I’m super humbled by the opportunity,” Strange responded. “It’s a great honor, I’m very excited about it and we’ll try to help people one day at a time.”
