LUDLOW — The Lion’s Den Athletic Association took to the streets this month, hosting a 5k to support the high school’s sports program.
The 5k attracted more than two dozen runners who did two laps in the area surrounding Ludlow High School. The Lion’s Den raises some $20,000 annually by hosting several events that include a golf tournament and comedy show.
The club had its race virtually last year because the coronavirus pandemic prevented people from gathering in person. That event attracted 30 runners and raised nearly $1,000. That was this year’s target as well.
“Our mission is to enrich the Ludlow High School athletic community by providing financial support to athletic teams, encouraging sportsmanship and character on and off the field and contributing to the spirit and enthusiasm of high school athletes,” said Ashley Mourao, Lion’s Den secretary.
The Lion’s Den supports teams by purchasing equipment outright or sharing the cost of what the athletes need. The shopping list is long, expensive and includes a new track, artificial turf, tennis courts along with updates to the baseball and softball fields. It can’t all be purchased in one year, but the Lions are in it for the long-term, helping whenever they can.
“We support sports because they give students a way to express themselves and to learn how to be good members of a team. It’s an outlet they wouldn’t ordinarily have,” said Mourao.
The Lion’s also hosted a pancake breakfast the day of the race. Because of soaring food costs, Mourao said they broke even on the breakfast. The club decided to have the event anyway, even though they didn’t expect to raise any money. The race did turn a profit of about $1,000.
“We wanted to bring together the community for an event where everyone would have fun in a good atmosphere,” she said.
Mourao said one of the most important parts of their mission is encouraging good sportsmanship.
“Sports teaches the athletes to be a good person on and off the field. If they do good things off the field, then they’ll do good things on the field,” she said.
Mourao has been involved with the club for several years and enjoys volunteering her time to support student athletes.
“I love it,” she said. “I love being able to support the athletes in any way we can. Even if it’s just a small thing they need.”
