Second annual Joshua Hurst Memorial Cookout set for August

Date: 8/1/2022

LUDLOW – The second annual memorial cookout honoring the late Joshua Hurst will take place on Aug. 14 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Ludlow Fish & Game Club.

The cookout will have food, yard games such as cornhole and ladder ball, a bounce house, a DJ, raffles and a cash bar. Each ticket is $50 and children 10 years of age and under are free.

According to Denise Anghilante-Hurst, Joshua’s stepmom, the funds from this cookout go toward supporting the Joshua Hurst Scholarship.

“It includes a donation to the scholarship fund, which is probably about half of the ticket cost would be a donation,” she said.
The scholarship was formed to honor Joshua after his passing in 2020. Ludlow High School seniors who play varsity sports are eligible to receive the scholarship.

“We’ve been able to raise enough money in the past year and eight months to provide 14 scholarships to 14 different students at $1,000 apiece. The scholarship goes to somebody that was similar to Joshua, had similar interests, goals and strides in life,” said Anghilante-Hurst.

In 2021, the recipients of the scholarship were Ethan Schwartz, Thomas Hitchcock, Kyle Fontoura, Jonathan Dubour, Joseph Vilano, Jack Serafino, John Riordan, Emma Forcum, Juliete Ribeiro and Gabrielle Flebotte.

In 2022, winners were Will Hall, Nick Henry, Yuho Jang and Hayden Potorski.

Anghilante-Hurst said that last year over 300 tickets to the cookout were sold. She said that they continue the tradition to keep Joshua’s memory and spirit alive.

“It keeps his spirit alive, it keeps his name alive in the Ludlow community and at Ludlow High School,” she said. “It’s very important to us for people to remember who he was.”

According to Anghilante-Hurst, her favorite part of the cookout is getting the community together and feeling their support.

“I think getting everybody together that he knew and loved and all of the community support. Everyone coming together for somebody that was very involved in the school and played sports and, overall, he was just an awesome kid and I think that everybody getting together kind of shows that. They’re there to support him and us as a family,” she said.

Tickets can be bought at the event, but Anghilante-Hurst said that they are trying to have as many people as possible purchase them in advance.
