Date: 9/19/2023

NORTHAMPTON — On Sept. 13, the city announced that Chad Dunham will be Northampton’s new director of the Human Resources Department.

Dunham, who most recently served as the city’s benefits specialist, will officially helm the department once the City Council approves his appointment at a future meeting. The appointment of Dunham was introduced at the Sept. 7 City Council meeting.

“I look forward to continuing my work with the city’s many dedicated employees in my new role,” Dunham said in a statement to Reminder Publishing. “I most enjoy interacting with them; every day I have the pleasure of learning about people from all different backgrounds working in a wide range of professions.”

According to the announcement, Dunham has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Anna Maria College and a master of business administration in management from Springfield College. He also has a certificate in local government leadership and management from Suffolk University and the Massachusetts Municipal Association.

In a statement, Mayor Gina-Louise Sciarra commended Dunham for his “dynamic energy” and “steadfast leadership.”

“I’m thrilled that Chad Dunham, pending City Council confirmation, will lead the Human Resources Department for Northampton,” said Sciarra. “Chad exemplifies our strong succession planning, benefiting from years of mentoring and extensive training.”

The mayor’s office stated that Dunham — a Framingham native — has acquired an extensive knowledge of employment law, labor relations, employee management, benefit and payroll administration and other institutional knowledge specific to the city.

Dunham moved to Northampton shortly after his undergraduate studies and now resides in Easthampton.

“My goal is to ensure that Northampton is and remains an inclusive and well-staffed workplace with a workforce that feels supported, valued and informed so that they can better serve our vibrant community,” Dunham said.

According to the city website, the Human Resources Department is responsible for providing personnel and labor relations services to the mayor, City Council, all city departments, the School Department, Smith Vocational High School, city and school retirees, and in certain cases, Forbes and Lilly libraries.
