Safety compliance testing lab moves into Northampton

Date: 11/27/2023

NORTHAMPTON — A Michigan-based company is solidifying its roots in Massachusetts with a new location where the old Northampton Cutlery Company used to be.

Cambium Analytica is opening a safety compliance lab for cannabis products at 320 Riverside Dr. within the next few weeks.

According to Alex Adams, the CEO of Cambium Analytica, the lab in Massachusetts will test cannabis products for consumer safety specifications.

“We test for pesticides, heavy metals, solvents, cannabinoid potency and microbiological contamination,” Adams told Reminder Publishing. “We test the products before they’re released and sold to the public.”

The Northampton location will be the company’s fourth lab and first in Massachusetts. According to Adams, they currently have three labs open in Traverse City, Michigan where they test food, dietary supplements, botanical products and cannabis. Their first official lab opened back in 2020.

When asked why the Massachusetts location, which will focus solely on cannabis testing, was the ideal spot for a lab, Adams said the state’s regulatory market, testing criteria and market size is similar to Michigan’s.

“[Massachusetts] has a really good regulatory structure that benefits testing labs,” Adams said. “We also have several clients that operate in Massachusetts and Michigan.”

Adams said each of Cambium Analytica’s tests require specific equipment. One type of equipment is chemical analysis instrumentation, which utilizes chromatography for separation and mass speculatory testing for chemical measurement. They also use equipment for microbial testing and little analyzers for moisture content.

“There’s very complex tests, then there’s very simple bench testing,” Adams said.

A lab like this is very important, according to Adams, because it ensures that consumer products are safe from known contaminants.

“It’s just really important for consumers to, first of all, have products that are free of contaminants, but also for products to have an accurate dosing of active ingredients,” Adams added. “So, when you take a supplement or say a cannabis gummy and it says that there’s 10 milligrams, it’s really important to be able to measure that and make sure that that actually is 10 milligrams.”

Adams said the Massachusetts location has 12 employees at the moment.
