Jubb begins role as Southwick School Committee member

Date: 8/25/2021

SOUTHWICK – New Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional School Committee member Patrick Jubb said he hopes to continue the growth and development of students in his new role on the School Committee.

Jubb said he chose to put his name in contention for the seat because “the timing was right” for his family and himself. He said he had always had an interest in running for the School Committee.

“This school district has produced some of the finest young men and women, and I aspire to grow our culture to an even greater school system. I have a great admiration for so many personnel in STGRSD [Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional School District],” said Jubb.

Jubb said he will draw from his past engagement with local youth, parents, and his fellow School Committee members that he has been affiliated with previously. Jubb is involved with local sports leagues and has three children who have gone through Southwick schools. Two of his children are currently enrolled in the district, and one was a member of the Class of 2020.

In his second meeting on the School Committee Aug. 19, Jubb was faced with a vote on whether to mandate masks for all children in the school district. He was one of five School Committee members to vote to follow the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s (DESE) guidance at the time, which “strongly recommended” that unvaccinated students and staff wear masks, but offered no enforcement or firm requirement.

The vote was taken with the understanding from School Committee members that the guidance could change or be clarified to offer actual enforcement of the policy before the school year begins.

Jubb said the day before the vote that he firmly believes in compiling information from infectious disease experts, DESE, and state officials about COVID-19 before making a decision related to the virus.

“In terms of COVID restrictions and or implementations , I am a firm believer in compiling as much information from our  community, CDC, DESE and state government before I formulate or instill my recommendations for the betterment of all,” said Jubb. “I understand everyone’s concern about this situation and I take it very serious. I have a son that is immune compromised, and I especially know how it feels to lie awake at night worrying about my son’s well being, as I’ve lived it for 18 years. I trust the science and guidance from our medical professionals.”
