SOUTHWICK – In the next event of Southwick’s 250 Anniversary celebration, the town will be hosting a Winter Carnival with activities for the whole family at the Southwick Regional School on Feb. 15.
Jim Putnam, the chair of the Southwick 250 Anniversary Committee, said the event is for anyone that wants to come celebrate the upcoming anniversary with some winter activities.
“Like a lot of our other events, this is family centered and something for people of all ages. We hope families with children or no children will be there. It’s a very inclusive event and you can pick and choose what you want to do,” he said.
He said that the school district has been a help to the Committee as it continues to plan the carnival and the rest of the events throughout the year.
“The Regional School District has been wonderful to work with. They’ve been very accommodating and have a great venue for this event,” he said.
There will be activities inside the building throughout the day, including face painting, trivia, a hockey shoot-out challenge and more. However, Putnam said he is hoping for some snow for some outdoor activities as well.
“If we get a nice little snowstorm between here and Feb. 15 then we can do some sledding at the nice hill there to test out the sleds from our cardboard sled building contest,” he said. “And if we do get a snowstorm, we have the capability for teams or individuals to build some snow sculptures up on the school grounds.”
Along with the activities, Putnam said there will also be two food trucks offering snacks and sandwiches for the whole day. “One of the trucks will be doing sliders and the second one, Murphy’s from Agawam, will be offering your typical food truck type offerings like sandwiches and hamburgers,” he said.
Putnam said that the carnival and the rest of the year’s events would not be possible without the committee’s planning group. “We have a wonderful event planning work group of eight people under the leadership of Freda Brown. They’re very creative and come up with all these great ideas,” he said. “I’m always amazed with the things they come up with.”
Putnam said he is looking forward to the carnival and seeing the community come out and get involved. “I’m looking forward to seeing families together and having a good time in a community meet and greet. It’s a wonderful opportunity to visit with people you haven’t seen in a while.”
The Southwick Winter Carnival opens its doors at 11 a.m. at Southwick Regional School on Feb. 15 and is free for the whole family.
