Abayudaya Jews to be subject of lectureDate: 11/10/2008 Israel Siriri is visiting as part of a national speaking tour sponsored by U.S.-based Kulanu Inc., which is dedicated to reaching out and assisting lost and dispersed remnants of the Jewish people.
He will lecture Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. The lecture will be preceded by light buffet supper at 6 p.m. Siriri will speak about current efforts of the Abayudaya Jews in Uganda in their struggle to survive. The Abayudaya Jews of Uganda are involved in several sustainable development projects: a large peace-oriented, interfaith education program, educating 500 Jewish, Muslim and Christian children in the primary, middle and high school; women's empowerment projects; a public health education project; micro-financed businesses in the crafts, music CDs, fair trade organic kosher halal coffee, dried fruit, and eco-tourism, among others.
He will be assisted by singer-songwriter Laura Wetzler, whose work with the Abayudaya Jews was recently featured in the Oprah Winfrey magazine, O. Siriri is an Abayudaya Jew from Mbale, Uganda.
The lecture is free of charge but there will donations for supper. Public is welcome at both events
The lecture will be taking place at JCA (Jewish Community of Amherst), located at 742 Main St., Amherst.
