Apple Jam offers big acts in intimate setting

Date: 8/10/2015

RUSSELL – The Apple Jam Roots Music Festival prides itself on maintaining the spirit of a family picnic while offering both the caliber of music and the amenities of a much larger festival.

While hosting national acts such as Anders Osborne (currently making the rounds at festivals across the country), Amy Helm and Spirit Family Reunion (both of whom are fresh off Newport Folk Fest) the festival continues to offer the intimacy of a private affair.

Outdoor games and kids activities are provided (most free of charge) to all guests and the varied camping options allow the choice between family camping, wilderness camping, general camping, or even pre-pitched tent rental.

Apple Jam’s kids’ tent has art supplies, scheduled crafts for school-age to youth led by an instructor, and small-scale carnival games and prizes all courtesy of the Phelps family.

Activities for all-ages include corn hole, giant jenga, lawn twister, tie dying, and the climbing tower.

There will be art walls and a scavenger hunt. Saturday morning there will be an old-fashioned field day for adults and children alike with events such as sack races and water balloon toss.

Originally a backyard event on family property, the Apple Jam has always focused on encouraging family-friendly fun.

“Our goal was to create a music event where all ages could have an equal amount of fun. Fun and family shouldn’t be exclusive. People connect through music innately and that connection should be cultured and shared with friends, family, and kindred strangers alike,” organizer Caitlin Phelps said.

Since 2007 the Apple Jam has promoted original, roots-based music and encouraged a widespread kinship through the shared musical experience.
