Appraisal might reveal a treasure

DEERFIELD If you've been wondering for years about the worth of an antique that is collecting dust in your basement or attic, now is the time to find out as WGBY and Historic Deerfield team up to offer an Antique Appraisal Fair on Sept. 14.
Last year's event was "extremely successful" and early registration is advised, according to Charley Rose, WGBY's director of corporate support and special events.
This weekend's appraisal fair, a fund-raiser for WGBY, is slated Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the White Church Community Center at Historic Deerfield.
Rose noted that there will be more experts from the Antique Dealers Association of America (ADA) on hand this year and an additional session has been added to accommodate more people.
Participants, who must purchase a ticket to the event in advance, can have up to three items verbally appraised by the experts, with commentary and historical perspectives offered by Historic Deerfield curators. Registration also includes two day-passes to Historic Deerfield, a complimentary ticket to the ADA/Historic Deerfield Antiques Show during the Columbus Day weekend, and a complimentary one-year membership to WGBY. There is free parking for the event and seating will be available while participants wait for their session to begin.
Rose explained that ADA members are professional antique dealers who must have a minimum of four years experience in the trade, be recommended by a committee of peers, and must sign a certification agreeing to abide by the bylaws of ADA.
"We're really thrilled that the ADA and Historic Deerfield have agreed to partner with us on this event," said Rose. "It's a unique opportunity to not only tap into the expertise of some of the country's top antique experts from the ADA, but also take advantage of the unique resources and historical perspective that the curators at Historic Deerfield can offer."
While at Historic Deerfield, visitors can take in the fall sights of the nationally recognized museum that features 18th- and 19th-century houses on their original sites. The quintessential New England village is surrounded by working farms and rolling cornfields along the Deerfield River. Current exhibitions include "What's New: Recent Acquisitions at Historic Deerfield, 2007-2008," "Into the Woods: Crafting Early American Furniture," "Engraved Powder Horns from the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, The William H. Guthman Collection," and "Celebrating the Fiber Arts: The Helen Geier Flynt Textile Gallery."
Tickets for the event are $100 and are available at WGBY's website, www.wgby.org, or by calling 1-800-838-3006. All proceeds raised from the fund-raiser will benefit WGBY's programs and services.
