Celebrate an evening of musicDate: 11/11/2008 Northampton Among the events taking place at the Northampton Center for the Arts this month are an evening of music in memory of Melissa Rich Mulcahy, and two programs for young people.
Pioneer Valley musicians will host the evening honoring the friendship and support that Mulcahy gave her musician friends. The concert, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m., will feature performances by many local groups, including Winterpills, Lo Fine, The Fawns, Spouse, National Carpet, School for the Dead, Aloha Steamtrain, Spanish for Hitchhiking, Haunt, The Claudia Malibu, Sitting Next to Brian, Jason Bourgeois, Trallfazz, The Caroline Know, The Humming Field, Zeke Fiddler, Steve Westfield, The Drunk Stuntmen, and others. New Haven-based musicians, Mr. Ray, The Mountain Movers, and Jeff Greene (Butterflies of Love) will be featured in the latter portion of the event, along with a special performance by renowned Dinosaur Jr. front-man, J Mascis.
The evening will include a raffle and the sale of albums and tee-shirts donated by the bands along with arts and craft items produced by Mulcahy's friends. The suggested donation is $20, and tickets are available at Pleasant Street Video in Northampton and the Apollo Grill in Eastworks in Easthampton.
On Nov. 16, at 2 p.m., Shelburne's Piti Theatre Company will offer a 50-minute performance of their original nature fable "Elmer ad the Elder Tree," followed by mural-making and theater workshops for young people 5-14 years old. Tree seeds for the children to plant will be distributed. The mural that the children create will be hung at the Center. Elmer's story is inspired by Shel Silverstein's "The Giving Tree" and Jean Giorno's "The Man Who Planted Trees but has been transformed by Piti Theatre's Godelieve Richard and Joathan Mirin into a dance-clown-theater interactive performance. Tickets are $8 for children 14 and under and $10 for adults.
On Nov. 18, from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., the Piti Theatre Company will present a version of "Elmer and the Elder Tree" especially tailored for the Center's monthly Young People's Performing Arts Program for children up to 5 years old. This series is underwritten by the Xeric Foundation and is free to children. A donation of $5 from adults is appreciated.
