SPRINGFIELD — The Fireflies, best known for their 1959 hit, "You Were Mine," are the star attraction at the New England Doo Wop Society's March 22 rock 'n' roll revival at the Cedars Banquet Hall on Island Pond Road.
"We bring in the hit makers from all over the United States who made rock 'n' roll history," said Gary Jones, one of the founders of the society, during an interview with Reminder Publications.
Jones noted that while casinos do a "great job" in keeping doo wop shows going, after the show everyone disappears.
"Not so in our case," Jones said. "All of the groups are always available for autographs, pictures and just good ole' conversation after the show."
Jones stressed that the society stays "true to the music," meaning that in each headlining act there will always be at least one original recording member.
"We chose to shy away from any groups misrepresenting themselves as original," Jones said. "We are not a tribute show."
The evening begins at 7:30 p.m. with the five-piece 50's dance band, The Skidmarks, who Jones promises is "entertaining and high energy."
"The Skidmarks are very much a crowd pleaser," he said.
The Encounters from Long Island and New York will be the second act.
"The Encounters were given the name 'Ambassadors of A Cappella' several years ago and remain one of the very best groups out there," Jones said. "They still remain one of the most requested groups that our audience wants to see over and over again."
The Fireflies, according to Jones, were originally from Philadelphia and now are based out of New York City.
"Writer and original member Paul Giacalone will be here with his smooth as silk group to captivate the audience with their fantastic harmonies and stage presence," Jones said.
For area residents interested in dinner before the show, a buffet of baked ziti with meatballs, baked Italian chicken, pulled pork, salad, rolls and butter, coffee and dessert will be offered beginning at 6:15 p.m. for $15 per person. Tickets for the show only are $30 per person.
Throughout the evening Jones will also conduct a 50/50 Raffle, and a host of doo wop CD's, books and T-shirts will be given away. In addition, doo wop jackets, sweaters, hats and other items will be available for sale.
