MassMutual Center shows “43 Towns”Date: 11/2/2017 SPRINGFIELD – The MassMutual Center is showcasing a unique photographic exhibit curated by the Springfield Photographic Society called “43 Towns.”
This distinct collection of images offers a colorful journey through the 43 towns in Hampden and Hampshire Counties. The photos have been provided by 31 members of the Springfield Photographic Society, whose primary goal is to capture the uniqueness of the communities it serves. The picturesque views and timeless imagery of “43 Towns” illustrate the history, culture, public spaces and natural beauty of western Massachusetts. Only one picture per town is represented as each photographer had to choose only one perspective that they felt was most important to understanding their town.
“43 Towns” also includes special tribute “The Lost Towns of Quabbin,” an exhibit by local photographer Les Campbell. According to historical records, there were once four more towns that were part of western Massachusetts: The towns of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott were abandoned in 1938 when the Swift River Valley was flooded to create Quabbin Reservoir.
“The Lost Towns of Quabbin” provides a glimpse of the towns (Dana, Enfield and Greenwich) with aerial photographs before and after the flooding. These photos are on loan from the collection of Les Campbell, who has lived on or near the shores of the Quabbin Reservoir since its inception.
“43 Towns” and “The Lost Towns of Quabbin” is on view until late-December. A members and media opening reception is scheduled for Nov. 10, 5 to 7:30 p.m.
