Valley Photo Center announces People’s Choice Awards winnersDate: 8/6/2014 SPRINGFIELD – The Valley Photo Center is pleased to announce the winners of the People’s Choice Awards for the Spring Open Submission show, Edward Hing, from Easthampton, and Joseph Schmidt from Hampden, who tied for the title.
The show was the final exhibit of the season that opened on May 29, 2013. The show featured the photographs of valley photographers and members of the Valley Photo Center and the awards were given to the photographers that earned the most votes from the public viewing the show.
Hing’s Photograph, “Redwood National Park” also was selected best in show by a panel of judges. Edward Hing is the photography and digital video instructor at The Williston Northampton School. Prior to teaching, he was a New York based advertising photographer. Hing and his wife Janine Norton, also a photographer, reside in Easthampton.
The images from the Valley Photo Center Spring Open Submission are from an ongoing body of travel photography utilizing the panoramic format begun in 1998. The ‘Redwoods’ was taken in 2005 with an xPan film camera (30mm lens) and the ‘Coffee Plantation’ was captured in 2013 with a D7000 dSLR (10-24mm lens). Both images were edited utilizing Photoshop & NIK Silver FX and printed using a pigment based inkjet HP9180.
Hing will be teaching a workshop in Black and White digital imaging at The Snow Farm (www.snowfarm.org) in Williamsburg Aug. 11 to 15.
Schmidt’s Photograph, “Direct Connection” was the other photograph selected by patrons of the gallery to tie for the people’s choice award. While his photograph was not select by the panel of professional photographers for an award, it is an example of a photograph that ordinary people liked. Schmidt is an amateur photographer and he captured the image while on vacation with a digital camera. His winning photograph was printed on color Kodak paper by a commercial lab.
He is a graduate of Minnechaug Regional High School and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a major in geology.
