CLUB INDGO provides a jolt to summer with “Show You Off” Date: 8/7/2023 It never feels like CLUB INDGO is not having a good time when they make music: just watch the video to their newest track “Show You Off.” The seven-member supergroup; which consists of Rhode Island singer Sança, Boston rap team ILL ADDICTS, photographer Dalvin Lopes and Boston producer Buu; dance around a sun-drenched living room with the same bohemian spirit as friends convening for a Friday night pajama jam session at a slumber party.
The comical addition of Frosted Flakes, a random fire hygrine, and the abrupt appearance of a hooded dinosaur blanket almost makes you forget about ProSwervez’s chorus, which illustrates a tenuous relationship suffering from ambivalence, “Why would I show you off?/Know I should break it off/Yet I can’t cut you off.”
It is impossible to do that, though, because the entire song, including Pro’s chorus and production, is catchy and danceable. Over a slinky and sparse funk-infused beat that will have you swaying like one of those inflatable tube men, Pro, Julez and Sança encapsulate why the group is so exciting to follow.
Even though they operate on the same plane of unrequited love, Sança’s soothing R&B vocals in the first verse are an ideal juxtaposition to Juelz’s forceful rap performance in the final half of the song; and Pro’s sing-rap hook ties it all together.
A structure like this is evidence that music is a fluid concept for CLUB INDGO. There are elements of pop, rap, R&B, funk, soul and electronic, but not one sound dominates the others, and you can hear that in the small number of tracks the group has released, including their opulent debut song “Are You in the Room.”
There is a breeziness and suave to their sound that beckons people to dance and find humor in tough situations, but simply calling it “fun” would be a disservice to their craftiness and chemistry. Their music feels like a temporary weight off your shoulders, a light at the end of the tunnel; something to put on after a tough day at work. It is quintessentially music without having to be maximal or self-serious: creating for the sake of creating.
“Show You Off” is available to stream on Spotify.
