"Yonder Mountain String Band"

The Yonder Mountain String Band is a quartet from Colorado that takes traditional bluegrass and brings it high up to the Rocky Mountains where it flies freely in the thin air. In their earlier days they were primarily a live act, in the past few years though, the Yonder Mountain String Band have recorded and produced three albums. These days they are a big name on the music festival circuit and play in front of crowds all over the world.

This album, their fourth release, displays the Yonder Mountain String Band at a stage of maturity where slower paced songs and thoughtful lyrics balance out their more raucous straightforward country-fried thrash. The band recently added a drummer who appears on several tracks. It's just one more way the band separates itself from a traditional bluegrass outfit.

The arrangements on the CD are tight and cohesive. "Fastball" one of the only two instrumental tracks is a blistering, fast paced romp that shows off the talents of each member. Adam Aijala (guitar), Jeff Austin (mandolin), Dave Johnston (banjo), and Ben Kaufman (bass) also write their own material and each has a few songs featured on here.

The introspective "I Ain't Been Myself in Years" contemplates the void that is left in life after ending a relationship. While "Troubled Mind" is a frantic tale of a man trying to figure it all out.

The Yonder Mountain String Band has created an album that expands the genre most would associate with them. Their virtuosity is not meant to be pigeon-holed.
