SPRINGFIELD For many people, the new Yogurt City is a little bit of soft serve heaven.
The new dessert spot located at the Five Town Plaza in Springfield has a do-it-yourself concept: pick a 16 or 20 ounce cup and decide which among the 14 flavors of soft serve frozen yogurt one would like and then hit the topping bar with a wide of variety of fresh fruits, candies and other items.
The cost of determined by weight at 43 cents an ounce, explained co-owner John Moylan.
Moylan, who is a long-time Subway franchise owner, said the initial reaction has been favorable for the new store.
"We've been pleasantly surprised," he said.
The national chain has stores in New York, North Carolina, Virginia, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Hampshire. According to the chain's website, most of the yogurt flavors are fat free.
The difference between Yogurt City and other ice cream places, Moylan said, is "people can have as little or as much as they want. They control what they are going to have."
Although open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week, Moylan said the business is "very night driven."
The location, which is near several sit-down restaurants has proven to be a good one as people will have their meals elsewhere, but come to Yogurt City for dessert.
Moylan said he and his partner, William Skinner Jr., looked at several locations, but was impressed with the traffic flow and parking facilities at Five Town Plaza.
The partners are now looking for other locations to expand their franchise.
