CHICOPEE -- Dance the night away to the sounds of Motown and doo-wop as the New England Doowop Society hosts a rock 'n roll spectacular Oct. 30 at the Castle of Knights.
Headliners for the evening include Shades of Blue from Michigan, the Flamingos from New York, and Wide Variety from New Jersey.
"One of the reasons we feel this is a special show is the amazing talent that we have lined up," said Gary Jones of the doowop society during an interview with Reminder Publications.
Shades of Blue, best known for their 1966 hit, "Oh How Happy," will open the show.
"Being from Detroit they will be singing some Motown as well as doowop," added Jones. "They are often referred to as Blue Eyed Soul."
Wide Variety, an a cappella group, will follow Shades of Blue.
"I have seen the guys several times and they are one of my favorites," said Jones. "This is a seven-member group and they certainly will fill the room with their great voices. They will also throw in a little comedy which we know the audience really enjoys."
Closing the show will be J. C. Carey and the Flamingos.
"They will sing all of their hits including 'Lovers Never Say Goodbye,' and 'I Only Have Eyes For You,'" said Jones.
The back-up band for all the groups is Tom Tisdel and the Society All Stars.
Jones noted he relishes the chance to bring such talented and diverse performers together.
"One of the best comments I have heard is that it is nice to be transported [back] in time, even if it's just for a little while," he said.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for a buffet which will feature soup, salad bar, meatballs with marinara sauce, sweet Italian sausage with peppers and onions, lasagna, garlic bread, rolls and butter, and assorted desserts.
Tickets are $30 for the show only and $42 for the buffet and show. The entertainment starts promptly at 8 p.m.
Jones noted that the doowop society's events always feature a surprise act to start off the night. A 50/50 raffle is also planned along with T-shirt giveaways.
"All the entertainers will be available for autographs and pictures after the show," said Jones. "If anyone has any of their records, bring them along to have them autographed."
For ticket information, call Jones at 478-0901 or send an e-mail to doowopgmj@yahoo.com. Tickets will also be available at the door.
