Experience Christmas by Candlelight at Old Sturbridge VillageDate: 12/8/2008 Sturbridge, MA On six special evenings in December visitors to Old Sturbridge Village can escape the holiday frenzy, experience the magic of a candlelit New England village and learn about the real history of today's Christmas traditions during the OSV's "Christmas by Candlelight" celebrations, from 5 9 p.m., Dec. 12, 13, 14 and Dec. 19, 20 and 21. Historic interpreters in costume will explain the origins of Father Christmas, sugarplums, Yule logs, Christmas trees, mistletoe and more. Guests can ride in a horse-drawn sleigh (snow permitting) or a horse-drawn wagon, sip hot cider, hear stories, see chestnuts roasting by an open fire and bring their cameras for photos with both Santa Claus and Father Christmas. At each Christmas by Candlelight event, period music, carols and holiday songs will be performed by a variety of area schools, church and civic musical groups.
Visitors will learn the history of how fruitcake become associated with Christmas, the history of Christmas cards, exchanging gifts, hanging stockings, Christmas trees, mistletoe, holly, poinsettias, candy canes and more.
The Bullard Tavern at Old Sturbridge Village will also offer a traditional holiday three-course prime rib dinner with children's menu options from 5 8 p.m. on each Christmas by Candlelight evening. Reservations are recommended; call 508-347-0363 for pricing and details.
