Holyoke Catholic students to stage ‘Guys & Dolls’

CHICOPEE – “Guys & Dolls,” a musical set in the 1930’s, will be staged by the performing arts department of Holyoke Catholic High School next month.

“This show is so much fun and the music is recognizable,” said Eva Stockhamer, director, during an interview with Reminder Publications. “We chose this show because we really love it.”

Stockhamer explained that the characters are gamblers and the plot line revolves around their lives and loves.

“Nathan Detroit is a crap game promoter and he and his buddies are always looking to have a game with some high rollers,” said Stockhamer. “Nathan is also engaged to Miss Adelaide, and he is just waiting for the one big score so he can marry her and settle down.”

Stockhamer added that Nathan Detroit and Miss Adelaide have been engaged for 14 years.

“Sky Masterson is just the high roller to get that done for Nathan, until he falls for ‘A Mission Doll’ named Miss Sarah from the Save the Soul Mission,” she added.

Stockhamer noted that one scene leads to another and after a “big crap game in the sewer,” they all live happily ever after.

Starring roles in this production include Christopher Carey as “Nathan Detroit,” Abbie Malouin as “Miss Adelaide,” Brett St. Onge as “Sky Masterson,” Molly Yarrows as “Miss Sarah,” Joe Kervick as “Arvide,” Brad Zweir as “Benny Southstreet,” and Owen Cusick as “Nicely-Nicely Johnson.”

“Guys & Dolls” will be staged Sept. 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Veritas Auditorium at Elms College. A snack bar will be available during intermission.

Stockhamer encourages area residents to attend one of the performances and to support the students.

“It is always a great thing to support local performers and in this case, many may remember the movie with Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando,” said Stockhamer. “The costumes are fun, the Hot Box Chicks are entertaining, and the music is very memorable.”

Persons working behind the scenes include Dr. Frank Croke, Andrew Morey, Paul Morey, Dr. Andy Boraski, Sue Crowell, Tyler Cox, Nick Cox, Katie Cox, Will Kervick, Joe Kervick and Ben Kervick.

“They are all folks who built our fabulous set,” said Stockhamer.

“The costumes, dialogue and music can’t be beat,” added Stockhamer. “It’s fun and uplifting, a show for all.”
