Odyssey Bookshop announces January events calendarDate: 1/2/2015 SOUTH HADLEY – The Odyssey Bookshop in South Hadley has announced the following programs for January. All events are conducted at the bookshop at 7 p.m. unless otherwise indicated.
Dig your face into sinful snacks, overindulge on cookie cake, and celebrate with local author Gina Damico as she reads from her new book “Hellhole” Jan. 6, at 7 p.m. at the Jones Library in Amherst.
Books will be on sale at the event. Complimentary refreshments will be provided.

About “Hellhole:” Geeky, squeaky-clean Max Kilgore only has one dirty habit: digging for fossils. One day, to his horror, his shovel strikes not upon a dinosaur bone, but a pit to hell – and out of it comes a devil. Specifically, the kind of devil who eats a lot of junk food, watches a lot of reality television, plays a lot of video games, and refuses to leave Max’s basement. Jason Reynolds, “Killing Time in Crystal City” and Chris Lynch, “The Boy in the Black,” Jan. 9 at 6 p.m.
Chris Lynch is the Printz Honor Award-winning author of several highly acclaimed young adult novels, including “Printz Honor Book Freewill,” “Iceman, Gypsy Davy, and Shadow Boxer” – all ALA Best Books for Young Adults. He holds an master’s degree from the writing program at Emerson College. He teaches in the Creative Writing MFA program at Lesley University. He lives in Boston and in Scotland.
Jason Reynolds is crazy… about stories. After earning a bachelor’s degree in English from The University of Maryland, College Park, he moved to Brooklyn, New York, where you can often find him walking the four blocks from the train to his apartment talking to himself. Well, not really talking to himself, but just repeating character names and plot lines he thought of on the train, over and over again, because he’s afraid he’ll forget it all before he gets home. He is the author of the critically acclaimed “When I Was the Greatest” and “The Boy in the Black Suit.”

Tim Johnston, “Descent,” Jan. 15, at 7 p.m.
The Odyssey welcomes Tim Johnston, “Descent,” the story of a family undone by the disappearance of a daughter who went out for a morning run and didn’t come back, is stunning in its emotional impact – a compulsively readable page-turner with a strong literary sensibility. The girl’s vanishing – on a sunny, late-summer vacation morning – all the more devastating for its mystery, is the beginning of the family’s harrowing journey down increasingly divergent and solitary paths, until all that continues to bind them to each other are the questions they can never bring themselves to ask: At what point does a family stop searching? At what point does a girl stop fighting for her life?
Johnston is the author of the debut adult novel “Descent,” the story collection “Irish Girl,” and the young adult novel “Never So Green.” Published in 2009, the stories in “Irish Girl” won an O. Henry Prize, the New Letters Award for Writers, and the Gival Press Short Story Award, while the collection itself won the 2009 Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction.
