Old time string band to celebrate summer at WistariahurstDate: 7/20/2009 HOLYOKE The Wistariahurst Museum will be presenting two outdoor concerts in the last week of the month.
On July 26 at 2 p.m. the museum will host Shingle the Roof: Old Time String Band. Bring a blanket or chairs and a picnic lunch for a lively and entertaining Sunday summer afternoon of acoustic music.
Shingle the Roof is a New England string band featuring three long-time friends: Kate Spencer, Jerry Devokaitis and Tim Woodbridge.
Specializing in traditional songs from two vibrant American traditions, contra-dance and string band music, Shingle the Roof play tunes and songs with haunting vocal harmonies. Shingle the Roof's repertoire is drawn from the various mother lodes of roots music including old-time, traditional country and early bluegrass, gospel, ragtime and blues, and their influences include Uncle Dave Macon, the Carter family, the Skillet Lickers, the New Lost City Ramblers, Joe Val, the Everly Brothers and many more, too numerous to mention.
Shingle the Roof will delight the audience with their lively tunes, funny songs, gruesome murder ballads and historical or imagined tales of life and love.
Admission fee is $7 per person or $15 per family
On July 30 at 6 p.m. Wistariahurst invites the community to spend a summer evening in the gardens listening to the delightful music of the Holyoke Youth Summer Strings Program.
The Summer Strings Program will perform an array of folk, classical and pop music. The youth orchestra is led by program director Jenifer Gelineau, and involves students from E.N. White, Kelly, Morgan, Peck and Holyoke High schools. The Strings Program has a mission to build a proactive community of strong leaders and fine musicians.
In the occurrence of rain, the concert will take place inside Wistariahurst's Music Room. The program is free, but donations will be accepted.
Wistariahurst Museum, located at 238 Cabot St., is dedicated to preserving Holyoke's history and inspiring an appreciation of history and culture through educational programs, exhibits and special events. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Wistariahurst is the former home of William Skinner, a prominent silk manufacturer.
