The Best Damn Sandwich: Rice Fruit FarmDate: 10/10/2018 WILBRAHAM – This week I brought my coworker and The Reminder’s Assistant Editor Jordan Houston out to Wilbraham to eat this week’s best damn sandwich. We weren’t disappointed.
Rice Fruit Farm is one of Wilbraham’s not–so-hidden gems. In the late 1800’s Jesse Rice opened Rice Fruit Farm as a farmstand that sold fresh produce and home baked goods. Following Rice’s passing, the Maloni Family purchased the farmstand a few years later, and reopened the space.
Rice’s offers a cozy, rustic space for locals and out–of–towners alike to enjoy homemade ice cream, desserts, bakery goods and seasonal produce. They offer locally roasted organic coffee, fresh baked pies, bagels and my favorite, their mouthwateringly delicious breakfast sandwiches. The food is only part of the Rice’s experience–the atmosphere is what truly draws me in. With wood covered walls, wooden seats, stools and benches, to the ceiling, which is painted blue with light white clouds, Rice’s is both whimsical and homey; both inviting and eclectic.
I’ve been taking trips to Rice’s since I was a child, most often I would go with my grandparents for a sweet treat when I would visit them as they live right down the street. When I was in college at Western New England, I, along with many of my peers, would find ourselves at Rice’s on a Saturday or Sunday morning enjoying a breakfast sandwich and coffee. Now that it’s been a few years since graduation I still find myself at Rice’s, however lately it’s been with Jordan enjoying my favorite and what I consider “the best damn sandwich”– Rice’s Californian breakfast sandwich.
Rice’s offers seven different types of breakfast sandwiches, which use two cage free eggs. The sandwiches are grilled on your choice of ciabatta bread, a bagel of any variety, or a croissant. The farmstand offers sandwiches in the following varieties: spicy, sweet, western, Mexican, badabing, egg and cheese, and the star of my show–the Californian.
The Californian consists of two fried eggs, pepperjack cheese, tomato, avocado and red onion. I always order my sandwich on an everything bagel, and usually without the red onion. Generally, I’m not a fan of eggs. This sandwich, though, changes that. The bagel offers a delicious crunch to balance out the soft avocado and leaves me fully satisfied.
The Californian will run you $5.95, however patrons have the option to add bacon, ham or sausage to any sandwich for $1.49.
Rice’s Californian is the best damn sandwich for me, what’s the best damn sandwich for you? Email news@thereminder.com with recommendations of Western Mass sandwich shops and the specific sandwich to taste test.
