UMass Fine Arts Center to host inaugural Piano Day Sept. 29Date: 9/19/2013 AMHERST – The inaugural Piano Day will take place on Sept. 29 at Bezanson Recital Hall in the music wing of the Fine Arts Center, on the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst campus.
Created by the Department of Music and Dance for junior/senior high school and college pianists, their parents and teachers, the Free event will enable participants to learn about college auditions and hear UMass Amherst faculty, students and alumni perform.
“Piano Day promises to be a wonderful opportunity for aspiring young pianists,parents and teachersto visit the UMass Amherst Department of Music and Dance and sample the many artistic offerings of our program,” Gilles Vonsattel, professor of piano said.
Piano Day will include performances by current UMass students and a distinguished alumna, as well as solo and collaborative performances by the faculty. Selected participants will have the opportunity to perform in a Master class on a Steinway concert grand piano.
A presentation by the faculty on the college audition process will be followed by a question and answer session. There will be free pizza and plenty ofsocializing!
Professors Nadine Shank and Vonsattel, understand that young musicians face many questions as they decide ontheir future educational and career paths. At Piano Day they will share insight into the demands and rewardsof pursuing music in higher education.

Schedule for Piano Day, Sept. 29:
• 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. – Performances by UMass Piano Professors Shank & Vonsattel, Professor Emerita Estela Olevsky and current students; Master class for selected high school students; discussion about college auditions with faculty: Preparation, Repertoire and What to expect; intermission with snacks
• 4 p.m. – Piano recital by a visiting alumna; Yan Yu, who received her master’s degree at UMass in 2008. She will perform works by Prokofiev, Gabriela Lena Frank and Rachmaninoff.
