SPRINGFIELD – American International College was awarded $10,000 by Smith & Wesson to provide five $2,000 scholarships, one per academic year through 2019, to students in the School of Business who are entering their sophomore year.

Each award will be made to a student with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher from Hampden or Hampshire County. Ideal candidates for the scholarships share a passion for the manufacturing industry and a quality product. Each of the five recipients will be offered a paid summer internship with Smith &Wesson following his or her sophomore year.

“At Smith & Wesson we actively support students who seek to further their education, with a particular emphasis on the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM),” Anne Bruce, vice president of Human Resources at Smith & Wesson, said. “We believe that excellence in these fields of study will help to shape tomorrow’s leaders so that they can best support a healthy manufacturing environment capable of driving job creation.  We thank AIC for their ongoing support of education in the Pioneer Valley and applaud all the applicants for this year’s scholarship.”

The 2015 scholarship has been awarded to Alexander M. LaFayette of Ludlow. LaFayette, a scholar-athlete, is an accounting major and member of the AIC Yellow Jackets baseball team. In addition to being a Dean’s List honoree, LaFayette was named Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week in April.
