Big Y donates to Fuel Fund

Big Y makes a donation to Fuel Fund

SPRINGFIELD Big Y Foods, Inc. has donated $1,000 to the Greater Springfield Senior Services' Emergency Fuel Fund for low income older adults struggling with high energy costs. "We are very pleased to have been chosen as a beneficiary for funds that were raised through the Big Y Paul H. D'Amour Charity Golf Outing," said Elaine Massery, executive director of Greater Springfield Senior Services, Inc. "Big Y and the D'Amour family have a long history of supporting local charities and has truly helped to make the community a better place to live for people of all ages. We are very grateful for their support."

According to Massery, rising energy costs may be an irritant to many people, but they're an acute hardship for people living on modest and low incomes because they spend a large share of their funds on utilities and other necessities.

"We work very hard to help seniors access every community resource that may help meet their needs. However, applications take time to process, fuel funds run out, or seniors are just over the income guidelines but have high medical expenses to meet. In response, we established an emergency fuel fund specifically for the high-risk clients served by our agency and is funded by private donations," said Massery.

Since 1972, Greater Springfield Senior Services has been providing a variety of services for older adults and their caregivers, such as meals-on-wheels, home care, information and referral, and protective services for residents living in its twelve city and town service area.
