Career Opportunities

Alternative energy career opportunities increase

As the use of alternative energy sources increases, career opportunities have never been better for those who are certified to install photovoltaic (PV) cells. The Center for Business and Technology has scheduled a training program that is designed to prepare individual seeking certification in this growing field.

The "Photovoltaic Installer Certificate Program" will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the spring and is designed for architects, engineers, electricians, general contractors and those interested in developing a career in Photovoltaics. The course instructor, Christopher Derby Kilfoyle, brings 26 years of experience in the field and guest lecturers from the Utility and PV industry will discuss grid capacity interaction and PV component development.

This course will provide a comprehensive coverage of stand alone, utility interactive, and dedicated load applications for solar electricity. This program has been approved by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practioners (NABCEP) and participants will receive a comprehensive preparation for the PV Certification exams offered by NABCEP as well as a detailed understanding of the types of photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules, the design of various PV Direct Current Source Circuits and their associated power electronics and switchgear. The 30 kW PV system that was recently installed in STCC Technology Park will be utilized for field demonstration lessons.
